Significance

Honours Goddess Gauri (Parvati) as the bestower of womanhood and fertility. Recognised as the state festival of Telangana in 2014; the flowers represent the biodiversity of the Deccan plateau.

Women in traditional silk sarees build 7-tier conical arrangements of seasonal wildflowers — the 'floral goddess' — and sing in circles around her at dusk, then immerse her in the nearest lake on Day 9. Every Telangana village becomes a flower mandala.

First-time visitor

Visit a Warangal village for the quiet first days, then Hussain Sagar for the mass immersion on Day 9.

What to see

  • Daily floral stack building at sunset
  • Women singing Bathukamma folk songs in circles
  • Saddula Bathukamma — final immersion on Day 9
