Shigmo
Goa's hidden spring festival
Significance
A 5-day celebration honouring the return of farmer-warriors after the harvest. Distinct from coastal Christian Goa — this is the Goa of the Hindu hinterland.
Goa's answer to Holi — but older, deeper and tribal. Float parades wind through Ponda and Bicholim, with farmers performing the ancient Romta Mel dance and throwing powder at sunrise.
First-time visitor
Catch the Panaji parade on Day 3, then head to a village temple at dawn on Day 5 for the powder-throwing.
