Significance

Marks the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Also celebrates the start of the harvest, making it a sacred day for both Sikhs and farmers of Punjab.

The wheat harvest, the birth of the Khalsa, and the Sikh New Year — all in one day. Golden Temple glows in its most elaborate decoration, Bhangra troupes perform in village fields, and langar serves hundreds of thousands.

First-time visitor

Start at the Golden Temple at 4 AM for the Palki Sahib, have langar, then head to a village akhara by afternoon.
