Significance

Commemorates the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, who is believed to have subdued evil spirits and protected Buddhism in the region.

The largest Buddhist monastic festival in Ladakh, held at the 17th-century Hemis Monastery. Monks perform the Cham — elaborate masked dances depicting the victory of good over evil.

First-time visitor

Arrive the previous day, be at the monastery courtyard by 9 AM to get a spot near the Cham circle.
