The mother of all temple festivals
Significance
Inaugurated by the Maharaja of Cochin in 1798. The Elanjithara Melam — a percussion performance by 250+ artists — is considered the finest temple music in India.
A 36-hour spectacle centred on the Vadakkunnathan temple — 30 caparisoned elephants, synchronised parasol exchanges, and a 7-hour percussion ensemble that draws musicians from across Kerala.
First-time visitor
Arrive the morning before, find a rooftop spot near the temple, and stay until the dawn fireworks.
