About Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

A 122-metre cliffside citadel that has never been breached in 577 years — Rudyard Kipling called it 'the work of angels, fairies and giants'. From its ramparts the view of the indigo-washed old city below explains Jodhpur's nickname: the Blue City.

History

Rao Jodha, the 15th Rathore chief of Marwar, founded the fort on 12 May 1459 on a rocky outcrop then occupied only by the hermit Chidiyawala Baba — whose curse ('May your citadel suffer perpetual thirst') is still appeased annually with water from 33 stepwells. The fort expanded over 500 years and seven generations of Marwar kings; its seven gates each celebrate a specific military victory, and the innermost Loha Pol still bears the red handprints of 31 royal widows who performed sati in 1843. Unlike every other Rajasthani fort, Mehrangarh has never been stormed — only once, in 1806, did Jaipur's forces breach the outer wall, and they were repulsed within the day. The Maharajahs of Jodhpur still live in the adjoining Umaid Bhavan Palace, the last great palace built in India (completed 1943).
