History
Bengaluru was founded by Kempe Gowda I in 1537 as a mud-fort town — the name 'Benda Kaal Ooru' (town of boiled beans) commemorates an 11th-century Hoysala king who was served boiled beans by a poor woman here and vowed the town would grow into a city. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan rebuilt it in stone in the 18th century, laying out Lalbagh as a Mughal-style royal orchard in 1760. The British annexed it after Tipu's defeat in 1799 and used its cool 900-metre climate as a cantonment and summer retreat; Whitefield, HAL and Ulsoor were laid out as British-era neighbourhoods. Post-1985, Texas Instruments opened India's first software liaison office here, triggering the IT boom that turned a cantonment of 2 million in 1990 into today's 13 million-strong 'Silicon Valley of India'.
