About Vaishno Devi
A cave shrine to the Mother Goddess at 5,200 feet in the Trikuta range, reached by a 12 km pilgrim trail from Katra — one of the 108 Shakti Peethas and, with an average of 26,000 pilgrims a day, the most visited Hindu shrine after Tirupati.
History
Legend tells of a young girl named Vaishnavi, an incarnation of the three goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, who fled the sage-demon Bhairon Nath and hid in the Trikuta cave for nine months. When Bhairon caught up, she beheaded him with Mahakali's sword at the cave mouth; his severed head flew to a hilltop and is now the Bhairon temple, an essential 2.5 km detour above the main shrine. The three natural rock pindis of Mata — black (Kali), yellow (Saraswati) and red (Lakshmi) — were discovered by Pandit Shridhar in the 14th century. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, constituted in 1986, now runs the entire yatra with GPS-tracked pony stands, free battery cars, and India's only temple-owned helicopter service.
