About Gokarna
A five-beach horseshoe on the north Karnataka coast where sadhus and surfers share the same shoreline — a thousand-year-old Shiva pilgrimage town whose crescent coves (Gokarna, Kudle, Om, Half-Moon, Paradise) became the subcontinent's quiet alternative to Goa for travellers who want sand without dance-floors.
History
The town takes its name from the Sanskrit 'cow's ear' — the two rivers Gangavali and Aghanashini meet the Arabian Sea here in a shape said to resemble the god's ear. The Mahabaleshwar Temple houses the 'Atmalinga' — a self-manifested Shiva lingam that, in legend, was tricked from Ravana in exchange for a Brahmin boy's blessing, then planted in the earth at Gokarna where it stuck forever. The temple is so powerful in the Hindu imagination that pilgrims traditionally came only after a death in the family, to perform tarpanam. Western travellers 'discovered' Gokarna in the 1990s when Goa began to feel commercial; the beach-shack economy here remains mostly seasonal and family-run.
