About Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila)

One of the world's only 'living forts' — a 12th-century golden-sandstone citadel rising from the Thar Desert where 3,000 people still live, cook and run guesthouses inside the original fortifications built by the Bhati Rajputs.

History

Rawal Jaisal Bhati founded the fort in 1156 CE after a Yogi directed him to build on Trikuta hill — three peaks crowning the Thar Desert on the caravan route from Delhi to Central Asia. For 700 years, the Bhati Rajputs controlled the silk and spice trade passing through; their wealth built the mile of carved havelis within the fort walls — Patwa, Nathmalji and Salim Singh — still considered India's finest sandstone lattice-work. The fort survived three major jauhars (mass self-immolations by Rajput women to avoid dishonour) before the British annexation. UNESCO added it to the Hill Forts of Rajasthan Heritage Site in 2013. It is one of the largest inhabited forts in the world — and one of only two surviving 'living forts', the other being Carcassonne in France.
