About Jagannath Temple, Puri
A 12th-century Vaishnavite temple on the Odisha coast. The 65-metre shikhara is visible from across Puri, and the shrine counts as one of the four Char Dhams. Every year the Rath Yatra rolls three 16-wheeled chariots, pulled by 4,000 devotees, down a two-km avenue lined by a million pilgrims.
History
Built in 1135 CE by the Ganga-dynasty king Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the Jagannath Temple replaced an earlier wooden shrine said to have been founded by the tribal king Indradyumna, who carved the deities from a miraculous log that floated ashore. The three sibling deities — Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra — are unique in Hindu iconography for their unfinished wooden forms; every 12 or 19 years, in the Nabakalebara ritual, the bodies are reconstituted from neem trees chosen by elaborate omens while the 'Brahma' (soul-essence) is transferred by a blindfolded priest at midnight. The temple kitchen is the world's largest, feeding up to 100,000 pilgrims on festival days with food cooked in seven stacked earthen pots over the same fire — the top pot cooks first, defying thermodynamics, a phenomenon unexplained for nine centuries.
