Significance

Marks the end of the winter solstice month and the sun's journey into Capricorn. One of the few festivals tied to the solar calendar, so the dates never shift.

The state's most important festival. Rice is boiled until it overflows the clay pot — the auspicious 'pongal-o-pongal' moment — families draw kolams at their doorsteps, and cattle are bathed, painted and paraded on Mattu Pongal.

First-time visitor

Stay in a Chettinad homestay for Day 2 to witness the pongal pot overflow, then head to Alanganallur for Mattu Pongal on Day 3.

What to see

  • Bhogi Pongal — bonfires of old belongings on Day 1
  • Surya Pongal — overflow of the sweet rice pot at sunrise on Day 2
  • Mattu Pongal — cattle worship and Jallikattu bull-taming in Alanganallur
