About Renuka Mata Temple, Mahur

The eighth peetha of the Ashtadasha — Sati's right hand fell here — at Mahur in the Sahyadri foothills of north Maharashtra. The hilltop temple is one of the three-and-a-half Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra; the goddess is identified with Renuka, mother of Parashurama, and the wider hill-complex is the legendary site of his austerities.

History

Renuka was the wife of the sage Jamadagni and mother of Parashurama, the warrior-Brahmin avatar of Vishnu. The local mythology centres on a striking episode: Jamadagni, suspecting Renuka of impure thoughts, ordered Parashurama to behead his mother — Parashurama complied, and Jamadagni then granted him a boon, which Parashurama used to restore his mother to life. Renuka is therefore worshipped at Mahur as a goddess who returned from death, and pilgrims associate her with healing impossible illnesses. The hilltop temple complex actually contains three shrines on three separate hills: Renuka Mata herself, her son Parashurama, and the Datta Shikhar (a major Datta Sampradaya pilgrimage centre, said to be where Lord Dattatreya appeared). The original Renuka shrine is 13th-century Yadava-era; the present Hemadpanti-style structure was rebuilt in the 17th century. Mahur is one of the Sade Teen Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra alongside Kolhapur (Mahalakshmi), Tuljapur (Bhavani) and the half-peetha at Saptashringi. Stotram name: 'Mahurye Ekaveerika' (Ekaveerika is another name for Renuka).
