About Trimbakeshwar
A Jyotirlinga at the source of the Godavari, 28 km from Nashik — unique for its three-faced linga representing Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, and as the only Jyotirlinga where Kalsarpa Dosh nivaran pujas are performed.
History
The eighth of the twelve Jyotirlingas, situated at the foot of the Brahmagiri hill from which the Godavari rises. The current black-stone temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao between 1755 and 1786 in a fusion of Nagara and Hemadpanti styles. The unique three-faced linga (Tryambaka = three-eyed) inside the sanctum is constantly draped in gold and silver crowns, and is said to have been worn down to small pits over the centuries by ritual ablutions. Trimbakeshwar is the centre of the Kalsarpa Yog and Narayan Nagbali ceremonies — three-day rituals performed nowhere else in India to release ancestors believed trapped in spiritual debt. The 12-yearly Simhastha Nashik–Trimbak Kumbh Mela is one of India's four Kumbhs, drawing 10–20 million pilgrims to bathe at the Godavari's headwaters; the next is in 2027.
