About Srinagar and Dal Lake

Kashmir's summer capital. The city stretches along a 22 sq km lake. Cedarwood shikaras glide past floating vegetable gardens, 17th-century Mughal pleasure gardens, and hand-carved houseboats that have hosted honeymooners since 1888.

History

Srinagar was founded by Emperor Ashoka in 300 BCE as Srinagari and was rebuilt by King Pravarasena II in the 6th century CE. The Mughals transformed it from 1586 onwards — Jahangir famously declared 'If there be paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here' on first seeing the Kashmir valley. The Dal Lake houseboats evolved as a British-era workaround: the Dogra Maharajas forbade outsiders from owning land, so colonial visitors commissioned lavish floating homes on the water instead. The oldest continuously-used houseboat, the HB 'Lady Churchill', was built in 1884 and still takes guests today.
