About Sarnath

Where the Buddha gave his first sermon (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) to the five ascetics — a UNESCO-tentative archaeological complex 10 km from Varanasi, anchored by the 5th-century CE Dhamek Stupa and the Ashokan Lion Capital that became India's national emblem.

History

Originally called Rishipattana ('the seers' descent') and Mrigadava ('the deer park'), Sarnath is where Siddhartha — newly enlightened at Bodhgaya — found his five former ascetic companions and delivered the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, the 'turning of the wheel of Dharma'. The Buddha's first sangha was formed here. Emperor Ashoka erected the polished sandstone pillar in the 3rd century BCE; its four-lion capital, broken from the column, is now in the Sarnath Museum and serves as the national emblem of India. The Dhamek Stupa, a 43-m cylindrical tower, marks the exact spot of the first sermon — its lower half is the original Mauryan brickwork, the upper half added by the Guptas in the 5th century CE. Xuanzang, visiting in the 7th century, recorded thirty monasteries and three thousand monks; Muslim invasions in the 12th century reduced it to the ruins visible today, and excavations only resumed in 1834 under British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham.
