About Alopi Devi Temple (Madhaveshwari)

Fourteenth peetha of the Ashtadasha — the spot where Sati's wrist fingers fell, near the Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj. No idol stands inside. Devotees worship a wooden palanquin (doli) suspended on chains, honouring the legend of a goddess who vanished into thin air leaving only her doli behind.

History

The local legend holds that the goddess (Madhaveshwari, an aspect of Lakshmi) was being carried in a doli (palanquin) by attendants when she suddenly vanished into thin air — only the empty doli remained. The shrine that grew up around it never installed a replacement idol, and pilgrims continue to worship the wooden doli itself, now suspended on chains within the sanctum. The temple's name — Alopi (literally 'one who vanished') — comes from this episode. Stotram name: 'Prayage Madhaveshwari'. The temple's location near the Triveni Sangam (the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati) makes it a natural complement to the Sangam-bathing rite — pilgrims first take a holy dip, then pay obeisance to the Madhaveshwari, then perform shraddha at the Akshayavat (the eternal banyan tree at the Patalpuri shrine inside the Allahabad Fort). The combination of Devi peetha + Triveni Sangam + Akshayavat makes Prayagraj one of India's most layered pilgrimage cities.
