History

Emperor Akbar, having waited fourteen years for a male heir, visited the Sufi saint Salim Chishti in the village of Sikri in 1569; the saint blessed him and his son Jahangir (originally named 'Salim') was born that year. In gratitude Akbar built his entire new capital around the saint's hut — 6 sq km of palaces, mosques, caravanserais and the Buland Darwaza, at 54 metres the tallest gateway in the world, inscribed with the words 'The world is a bridge: pass over but build no houses on it.' The court left in 1585 when the water supply failed, and the city has stood essentially empty for 440 years — the rooftops, inlaid with Gujarati jaalis and Bengali chhajjas, preserve a syncretism Akbar's successors never matched.
