About Red Fort (Lal Qila)

For 200 years, Mughal emperors ruled India from this red-sandstone citadel. Every Prime Minister since 1947 has unfurled the tricolour from the Lahori Gate each Independence Day, addressing the nation from its ramparts.

History

Commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1639 after he shifted the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi, the Red Fort took nine years and 10 million rupees to build — a staggering sum at the time. Its walls of red sandstone rise 33 metres and stretch 2.5 km in perimeter; inside, the Diwan-i-Khas once housed the Peacock Throne, studded with the Koh-i-Noor diamond (both looted by Nadir Shah in 1739, the throne then melted down in Persia). The British demolished 80% of the inner palace compound after the 1857 uprising and used the fort as a garrison for 90 years. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 and remains the stage of India's annual Independence Day address, watched by over 100 million viewers every 15 August.
