About Pahalgam
A 2,740-metre alpine village at the confluence of the Lidder and Sheshnag rivers — the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, the summer retreat of the Mughal emperors, and the film-set meadow of half of Bollywood's 1990s love songs.
History
Known to medieval Persian chroniclers as 'Bail Gaon' (the shepherd's village), Pahalgam served as the last Mughal post-stage before the harder trails to Lake Sheshnag. The Amarnath Yatra was formalised here in the 15th century after the cave shrine was 'rediscovered' by a Muslim shepherd, Buta Malik, whose descendants still receive a share of the yatra's donations. Yash Chopra shot parts of 'Betaab' here in 1983, lending the Betaab Valley its current name and setting the mandatory template for every Bollywood hill-romance sequence for the next two decades.
