About Shankari Devi (Trincomalee)
First of the Ashtadasha peethas. Sati's groin or thigh is said to have fallen atop Swami Rock, a cliff on Sri Lanka's eastern coast at Trincomalee. Portuguese cannon levelled the original temple in 1622. What survives — foundations and a small modern shrine — sits on the cliff edge within the rebuilt Koneswaram Shiva complex.
History
'Lankayam Shankari devi' — the very first peetha in Adi Shankaracharya's Ashtadasa Shakti Peetha Stotram. The original Shankari temple sat atop Swami Rock (Konesar Malai), a 130-m cliff falling sheer into the Bay of Bengal at Trincomalee — the larger Koneswaram complex it was part of has been called the 'Rome of the Eastern Hindus' for its scale and for the seventeen pradakshina circuits its devotees performed. In April 1622, Portuguese commander Constantino de Sá de Noronha used the demolition of the temple as cover to fortify the cliff against rival European powers; he had the Koneswaram structure pushed off the cliff into the sea, with cannon fired through its sanctum. The original Shivalinga was thrown into the ocean by Portuguese soldiers and recovered by local Tamil Hindus in the 1950s — it is now reinstalled in the rebuilt Koneswaram temple. The Shankari Devi shrine itself is a much smaller modern reconstruction on the cliff edge, marked primarily by a small stone shrine and the visible historical foundations. Pilgrims from India undertaking the full Ashtadasha yatra complete the first peetha here before returning home and beginning the Indian sub-circuit.
