About Jogulamba Devi Temple, Alampur
The fifth peetha of the Ashtadasha — where Sati's upper teeth are said to have fallen. Alampur sits on the Tungabhadra, 200 km south of Hyderabad. Bahmani invaders razed the shrine in 1390. Reconsecration came in 2005, inside the Navabrahma complex of nine 7th-century Chalukyan Shiva temples.
History
Jogulamba (also called Yogini-amba) is a fierce, seated form of the Devi associated with the eight (or 64) yoginis of tantric tradition. The original Alampur temple was built in the 7th century under the Eastern Chalukyas as part of a complex of nine Brahma temples (Navabrahma) lining the Tungabhadra — Alampur was the gateway to Srisailam, and pilgrims would pass through this complex before crossing to the Mallikarjuna shrine. The Bahmani sultan Feroz Shah destroyed the Jogulamba shrine in 1390; the idol was hidden in the nearby Bala Brahma temple and worshipped there in secret for over 600 years. In 2005, the goddess was reconsecrated in a rebuilt temple within the Navabrahma complex, partly funded by the Telangana state government and Sri Vidya organisations. The Navabrahma temples themselves — Taraka Brahma, Swarga Brahma (the most ornate, with 7th-century rock-cut sculpture), Padma Brahma, Bala Brahma, Garuda Brahma, Kumara Brahma, Arka Brahma, Vira Brahma and Vishwa Brahma — are an ASI-protected site and Telangana's most important early-medieval temple cluster. The fifth peetha, 'Alampure Jogulamba'.
