About Omkareshwar
An island Jyotirlinga in the Narmada — the island itself shaped like the syllable 'Om' as seen from above — combining the Omkareshwar shrine on Mandhata island with the Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga on the southern bank of the river.
History
The fourth of the twelve Jyotirlingas, set on Mandhata island where the Kaveri tributary meets the Narmada — the Vishnu Purana names it after King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty who is said to have done penance here. The unique feature: the same site holds two Shaiva shrines on opposite banks — Omkareshwar on the island and Mamleshwar (also called Amareshwar) on the south bank — both worshipped as the same Jyotirlinga. The island temple is a Nagara-style stone structure with five floors; the lowest holds the natural linga, fed by the Narmada below. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have met his guru, Govinda Bhagavatpada, in a cave on the island that pilgrims still visit. A statue of Adi Shankara, 108 ft tall and unveiled in 2023, now stands above the island as the centerpiece of the 'Statue of Oneness' complex.
