About Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain
South-facing Shiva shrine on the Rudra Sagar in ancient Avanti. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the only one with a Swayambhu (self-manifested) lingam. The 4 a.m. Bhasma Aarti is the draw — no other major Indian temple opens the day by bathing the lingam in cremation-ground ash.
History
Ujjain — one of India's seven sacred cities and the prime meridian for Hindu astronomy — has worshipped Mahakaleshwar (Shiva as Lord of Time and Death) since at least the 3rd century BCE, when Vikramaditya's court is said to have consecrated the shrine. The present subterranean three-level temple was destroyed by Iltutmish in 1234 CE, rebuilt piecemeal under the Malwa sultanates, and received its definitive form in 1736 under Ranoji Shinde of the Scindia dynasty. Unlike the other 11 Jyotirlingas, Mahakal is Dakshinamurti (south-facing), a configuration reserved for the mortuary fire — hence the centuries-old Bhasma Aarti ritual at 4 a.m., where the lingam is bathed with ash (originally from a freshly-lit pyre at Ramghat, though modern practice uses cow-dung ash for sanitation). The Kumbh Mela at Ujjain (Simhastha), held every 12 years on the Shipra, is the third of the four great Kumbhs.
